Practical questions

Sexual consent is ongoing and can be withdrawn

Sexual consent is a freely made, ongoing agreement—not a one-time permission that covers everything afterwards. A person can change their mind before or during an activity. Testing, contraception, gifts, a previous relationship or a partner’s disappointment never remove the need for a current, voluntary choice.

General information for adults. Not a substitute for medical assessment.

Check the activity, not just a general yes

Agree what each person wants and which protection is part of that agreement. Consent to one activity is not automatic consent to another, and agreement with a condom is not agreement to removing it. Pause when someone hesitates, becomes uncomfortable or asks to stop. Silence, freezing or not resisting should not be treated as a reliable substitute for freely communicated agreement.

Keep freedom and capacity central

Someone who is asleep, unconscious or too affected by alcohol or drugs to make and communicate a choice cannot give meaningful consent. Pressure, threats and repeated demands also undermine free choice. Do not interpret a health condition or communication disability as an automatic inability to decide; accessible communication and the person’s actual understanding matter. If you are unsure that agreement is freely given, stop rather than testing a boundary.

Discuss boundaries outside the pressured moment

A calm conversation can cover how to pause, protection preferences and what either person does not want. It should not become an argument that a partner must justify every refusal. If an encounter felt coercive or someone was unable to consent, seek appropriate medical and emotional support; injuries, possible pregnancy or time-sensitive infection prevention should not wait for a routine booking response. Local support and legal processes need verified local advice.

Common questions

Does an earlier yes apply for the whole encounter?

No. Agreement can change, and any request to pause or stop must be respected.

Does a negative STI test create an obligation?

No. A test answers a health question, not whether someone consents to sexual activity.

What if I am unsure whether a person can choose?

Stop. Do not proceed on an assumption when freedom, understanding or communication is uncertain.

Questions before arranging an appointment?

Enquire about the next steps and availability. An enquiry does not confirm a booking or diagnosis and is not an emergency service.
